Bryn Mawr: A Wonderful Delaware County, PA Community to Call Home

Considered a census-designated place in Radnor Township, Bryn Mawr is a distinctive community with plenty to offer home buyers in the Main Line area.

With a population of just 4,382 as of the 2010 Census, Bryn Mawr (which means “big hill” in Welsh) is a rather close-knit community – and understandably so!

It originally was named after an estate near Dolgellau in North Wales. The property actually belonged to Welshman Rowland Ellis who was a Quaker who emigrated in 1686 to Pennslyvania.

But up until 1869, the community was known as Humphreysville. The town ended up being renamed by railroad agent William H. Wilson after he acquired the land surrounding the Pennsylvania railroad in the area.

Another milestone for the community came in 1893, which is when the first hospital (Bryn Mawr Hospital) was bult on the Main Line by Dr. George Gerhard.
