Wayne: A Quality Place to Live on the Lower Main Line in PA
Located on the Lower Main Line, Wayne is a beloved unincorporated community in Delaware County, PA.
What makes this community so special? Perhaps it’s the community’s thriving historic business district and its close knit sense of community. Perhaps it’s the friendly neighbors or the gorgeous residential properties.
Whatever it is, Wayne is a popular place to invest in Main Line real estate.
The History of Wayne, PA
Not many people know this but Wayne was originally called Louella after founder J. Henry Askin’s daughters, Louisa and Ella.
The community was originally developed because a railroad stop called Cleaver’s Landing was established in the area. The station was renamed Wayne Station after General Anthony Wayne.
Later, banker J. H. Askin would buy nearly 300 acres and name the community Louella.
But then in the 1880s, Askin joined forces with banker A.J. Drexel and newspaper editor G. W. Childs and the three men renamed their combined community “Wayne Estate.”
The name was ultimately shortened to Wayne and the community continued to grow as local industry diversified, attracting more people.
Today, more than 30,000 people live in this community, which is also home to such large companies as Kenexa and SunGard.
Plenty to See and Do on the Weekends
As previously mentioned, the Downtown Wayne Historic District is a popular destination for residents on the weekends.
